The National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) recently published an important message entitled “Human life is sacred”, highlighting the need for the Congolese justice system to respect the rights of those seeking justice and the procedures governing arrests. This recommendation comes at a time when respect for fundamental rights and the protection of human life seem to be undermined by tragic events.
Following the recent escape attempt at Makala prison, which resulted in the deaths of an alarming number of people, CENCO stresses the urgent need for reforms within the Congolese judicial system. Indeed, the policy of hasty arrests and clandestine incarcerations contribute not only to prison overcrowding, but also to human rights violations.
The bishops’ message highlights various tragedies that have brought mourning to the Congolese population, whether attacks by law enforcement or the inaction of the authorities in the face of these abuses. In a country already scarred by conflict and violence, it is imperative that justice exercises its functions with integrity and transparency to guarantee the rights and dignity of each individual.
CENCO therefore calls for concrete measures to improve the situation, including by prosecuting those responsible for these violations, promoting a culture of non-violence and strengthening prison infrastructure to put an end to the inhumane conditions prevailing in Congolese prisons.
In addition, the bishops express their frustration at the authorities’ failure to act in conducting investigations into these tragic events, calling on the government to respect its commitments to justice and the protection of human rights. It is essential that the police, who are supposed to ensure the safety of citizens, act in accordance with the laws and democratic values.
In conclusion, CENCO warns against the trivialization of human life in the DRC and calls on all stakeholders to work together to establish a climate of respect, justice and peace in the country. It is time to act in a concerted manner to prevent new tragedies and to guarantee a better future for all Congolese citizens.
