Internal tensions threaten UDPS unity and governance in the DRC

In the current political context in the Democratic Republic of Congo, tensions within the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) appear to be reaching a critical point, jeopardizing the unity and cohesion of the party as well as the stability of Head of State Félix Tshisekedi.

In the midst of this tense situation, René Mayilukila, a leading figure in the UDPS and chairman of the board of directors of the Congolese maritime agency, has called for a coalition between the rival factions of the party led respectively by Augustin Kabuya and Déo Bizibu Balola. According to Mayilukila, this union is crucial to avoid the weakening of the party and the head of state, and to support the latter in his mission to straighten out Congo and remain in power beyond 2028.

Mayilukila’s statements underline the importance of unity, cohesion and solidarity within the UDPS to address internal and external challenges. Indeed, divisions and internal quarrels risk not only weakening the ruling party, but also compromising the governance and political stability of the country.

Faced with this delicate situation, Déo Bizibu, recently appointed interim secretary general of the UDPS by the Commission of Discipline and Pedagogy (CDP), is calling for a meeting to hand over and resume with the outgoing secretary general, while Augustin Kabuya is contesting his dismissal and refusing to give up his place, promising a confrontation during the meeting scheduled for this Saturday.

This political impasse within the UDPS highlights the challenges that the party and President Tshisekedi must face to ensure political stability and effective governance in the country. It appears crucial that political actors prioritize dialogue, consultation and the search for consensual solutions to avoid an escalation of tensions and preserve the democratic future of the DRC.
