Tensions escalated this Sunday, September 1, 2024 in the province of Sankuru, as a dozen young people living in the provincial capital stormed the governorate to express their discontent. Armed with placards and led by a determined spokesperson, these young people vigorously demanded the immediate resignation of Governor Victor Kitenge and his government.
The protesters’ demands were clear: they denounced certain politicians accused of blocking the formation of the new government for personal interests, to the detriment of the urgent needs of the population. The young people of the Lusambu region pointed out the major problems they face on a daily basis, such as the deterioration of road infrastructure, persistent unemployment and the lack of economic development. For them, it was time for the provincial government to take responsibility and get to work to meet the legitimate expectations of young people.
Faced with this popular pressure, Governor Victor Kitenge dispatched a representative of his cabinet, Professor Gilbert Okoko, to calm the spirits and try to resolve the crisis. He acknowledged the legitimacy of the youths’ demands and promised that measures would be taken to form a provincial government capable of meeting the needs of the population. However, he highlighted the challenges they were facing, including the limited number of ministerial positions available.
It is important to note that Governor Victor Kitenge had been elected since April, but had only really started his activities when he returned the previous week in August. This situation reflects the difficulties of setting up a functional government, but also the growing impatience of the population who were calling for concrete actions to improve their daily lives.
Ultimately, this demonstration by the youth of Sankuru province highlights the challenges facing many territories in Africa, where lack of resources, corruption and political games hinder the development and prosperity of local populations. It is essential that governments take into consideration the real needs of their citizens and work actively to improve their living conditions, otherwise there will be an increase in demonstrations and popular demands.
