Failed escape attempt at Makala central prison: a look back at an eventful day

The heavy silence of the night was broken by a series of disturbing detonations echoing from the Makala central prison in Kinshasa. This Monday, September 2, will remain etched in people’s minds, as prisoners appeared to have initiated a desperate escape attempt. The police responded firmly, using their firearms to contain this wave of rebellion.

Information circulating quickly confirmed that this was indeed an aborted escape. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya described these events as a serious incident requiring rapid intervention by the competent authorities. The security services mobilized to restore order and reassure the local population, who were called upon to remain calm in the face of this tense situation.

These sad events revive memories of a dark day in May 2017, when a spectacular escape rocked the Makala central prison. Soldiers opened fire in an attempt to prevent the prisoners from fleeing. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to contain the wave of desire for freedom that animated some prisoners.

The authorities at the time had denounced an attack orchestrated by elements of the politico-religious movement Bundu dia Kongo, facilitating the escape of about fifty prisoners, including the famous leader Ne Muanda Nsemi. The situation had plunged the city into anguish, mobilizing the police to secure the surrounding area and capture the fugitives.

These recent incidents at Makala central prison once again highlight the need for constant surveillance and effective management of penitentiary establishments. Guaranteeing the safety of prisoners and the surrounding population remains a major challenge for the Congolese authorities, who are called upon to strengthen their control and prevention systems.

In these troubled times, the vigilance and responsiveness of the police are essential to maintain order and stability in the Congolese capital. Hopefully, these tumults will give way to a return to calm and careful reflection on ways to prevent such incidents in the future.
