Ounje Eko Discount Market: A Salutary Initiative for Food Security in Lagos

The launch of Phase II of the Ounje Eko Discount Market in Lagos has generated remarkable excitement among residents of the state. With the success of Phase I, which saw the establishment of temporary markets offering selected food items at discounted prices in all 57 administrative areas of the state, the population has been eagerly awaiting the new initiative.

When I visited one of the market sites, located on the former grounds of the School of Nursing on Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, I witnessed a large turnout of people eager to take advantage of the discounted food items. The crowd was in an orderly manner, with everyone seizing the opportunity to buy quality products at discounted prices.

The reactions of residents were unanimous on the positive impact of the initiative. Janet Obi highlighted the significant savings made compared to prices in the regular markets. She particularly commended the Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu and the Representative in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Gbolahan Yishawu for reviving the discount market.

Tunrayo Oredola stressed the importance of the initiative in combating food insecurity, while Isaac Jared expressed relief at the current cost of living. He also called on the government to sustain and expand the initiative statewide.

The Market Manager, Olabisi Lois, confirmed that the objective of the market was to provide families with affordable and balanced food items. She reassured residents that there was enough food for all, thereby reducing the risk of conflict.

In conclusion, the Ounje Eko Discount Market Phase II in Lagos has demonstrated its importance in contributing to the food security of the people of the state. This commendable initiative deserves to be encouraged and expanded to further support local communities and provide significant relief from current economic challenges.
