Abubakar, also known as Sardaunan Katsina, recently symbolically resigned from his post and returned to his hometown of Katsina last Friday. Greeted by officials of the Emirate Council, family members, friends and well-wishers, the former D-G was given a warm welcome upon his arrival at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport, before proceeding through the streets of Katsina, where residents expressed their gratitude to him, to the Emir’s palace.
Once at the palace, he offered his condolences to Emir Abdulmuminu Kabir-Usman on the recent demise of his younger brother, Hassan Kabir-Usman, also known as Sarkin Dawakin Cikin Gida, after a brief illness. The former NIA chief commended the Emirate Council’s continued support throughout his years of service in the country’s security intelligence arm, and promised to continue to provide the necessary support to the Emirate Council.
In return, the Emir warmly welcomed Abubakar to Katsina and commended him for his meritorious service to the nation. After serving as the Director of Intelligence in 2018, he resigned on August 24, citing “personal and family issues.” A native of Katsina State, the 71-year-old retired diplomat obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in French from Bayero University Kano (BUK).
Abubakar’s visit to Katsina marks a notable chapter in his career and highlights not only his commitment to his country but also his gratitude to his community. His departure from active service is a personal decision that, while raising questions, underlines the primacy of family and personal ties. By expressing his condolences to the Emir and continuing to declare his attachment to the region and its people, Abubakar shows a human and respectful side to his responsibilities.
His dedication and loyalty to national security cannot be questioned, and his willingness to remain involved in supporting his emirate demonstrates his desire to contribute positively to his community. Abubakar’s rich background, marked by his studies and diplomatic career, makes him a respected and influential figure, whose legacy is not limited to his period as D-G. His visit to Katsina is a testament to his appreciation of his roots and a symbol of his commitment to the unity and well-being of his community.
