Women’s empowerment, a lever for their full political participation

Fatshimetrie, 28 August 2024 – The importance of women’s empowerment to promote their full political participation in elections was at the heart of discussions during a remarkable presentation in Fatshimetrie in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The event highlighted the document entitled “Female Politicians and the Electoral Process II: Take-off or Cruising Speed?” and drew attention to the need to provide increased support to women aspiring to political positions.

Jean Michel Mvondo, Executive Secretary of the Civic Education Network in Congo (Recic), stressed that building women’s capacities is essential to effectively prepare them for upcoming elections. He also highlighted the importance of diversifying training programs and actively supporting women candidates throughout electoral processes.

In a context where gender inequalities and stereotypes persist, civil society organizations have a crucial role to play in raising awareness among citizens, political parties and educational institutions on the importance of women’s political participation. It is essential to combat discrimination and gender-based violence, while encouraging a vision of positive masculinity.

The publication of the results of the December 2023 elections marked the beginning of an in-depth assessment, conducted by Recic and its partners, on the place of women in politics. The aim is to measure the progress made and identify areas for improvement to ensure balanced and inclusive representation in all spheres of decision-making.

Joseph Wabatinga, coordinator of Recic, highlighted the main axes of the document presented, focusing on awareness-raising, election monitoring and the promotion of women’s political participation. For her part, Anny Matundu Bambi, advisor to the Ministry of Gender, Family and Children, praised Recic’s commitment to gender equality and equal opportunities.

This initiative, carried out in partnership with national and international organizations, is part of a broader project aimed at promoting a democratic, transparent and inclusive electoral process. It demonstrates the collective commitment to empowering women and building a more egalitarian society.

In conclusion, it is essential to strengthen efforts to ensure the full participation of women in political life, in order to create a more democratic and representative environment for all. The path to gender equality and social justice requires the emancipation of women and their full recognition as potential leaders and decision-makers.
