On this date of August 28, 2024, an important announcement was made by the Minister of Public Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Roger Kamba. In an official communication, he revealed alarming figures concerning the Monkey pox epidemic that has been raging in the country since the beginning of the year.

According to the data shared by the minister, no less than 610 cases of Monkey pox have been reported since January, of which 206 have been confirmed. These figures are worrying, especially since the cumulative number of suspected cases stands at 17,801, with unfortunately 610 deaths recorded, which represents a case fatality rate of 3.5%. The provinces most affected by this epidemic are mainly located in the West of the country, such as Equateur, Sud-Ubangi, and Maï-Ndombe, as well as in the East, particularly in the provinces of South and North Kivu.

Roger Kamba also highlighted that progress has been observed in the quality of information regarding Monkey pox cases across the country, particularly in the province of Équateur where the quality of information rate increased from 38 to 86%. He warned the population against the different routes of transmission of the disease, including from person to person, from person to contaminated object, and from person to animal. In order to limit the spread of the disease, it is essential to respect barrier gestures, maintain good hand hygiene, avoid any unprotected contact with wild or sick animals, cook food before eating it, and reduce the number of partners.

As an additional recommendation, the Minister of Public Health encouraged people with symptoms related to Monkey pox to contact the toll-free emergency number 151 to report cases. Faced with this worrying health situation, it is crucial that everyone takes their responsibilities to help stem the spread of the disease and protect their health and that of their loved ones.

This announcement by Roger Kamba highlights the urgency and importance of raising awareness among the population about the risks associated with Monkey pox and the preventive measures to be adopted to combat this epidemic. The vigilance and cooperation of all are essential to contain the spread of the disease and protect everyone’s health.
