A commendable initiative recently emerged in Ngaliema, west of Kinshasa, aimed at raising awareness among young people about the importance of combating violence against women and girls. This online conference, organized by the “Avenir des jeunes” foundation, was an opportunity for participants to discuss a crucial issue for Congolese society.

The foundation’s coordinator, Ayon Mavinga, stressed during this event that violence against women and girls remains among the most common human rights violations. Despite the efforts made by the government and its partners, these reprehensible acts persist and often go unpunished. Women are the first victims of these acts, perpetrated mainly by men who abuse their economic power to exert domination over them.

It is essential to realize that the fight against discrimination and violence is a cause to which it is impossible to remain indifferent. It is up to everyone to fully commit to defending the fundamental rights of women and girls, because their protection is essential to building an equitable and respectful society.

The foundation’s vice-advisor, Ms. Fideline Mukuna, highlighted the role of toxic masculinity in violence against women and girls. She stressed the importance of promoting positive masculinity, encouraging men to oppose harmful behaviors and actively support the cause of gender equality.

Finally, the vice-coordinator, Ms. Graciela Kalala, called on the young men present at the conference to become actors committed to eradicating violence and respecting women’s rights. She encouraged them to share their commitment with their community, in order to raise awareness among as many people as possible about this essential cause.

This initiative, led by the “Avenir des jeunes” foundation, demonstrates the importance of raising awareness among Congolese youth about the issues related to violence against women and girls. By promoting positive masculinity and encouraging civic engagement, this foundation actively contributes to building a more just and egalitarian society.

It is imperative that we continue to support such initiatives and work together to end violence against women and girls, in order to guarantee everyone the fundamental right to life, health and physical integrity. The individual actions of each person can have a significant impact in the fight against gender injustice and discrimination, and it is by joining forces that we can build a better future for all.
