In today’s turbulent world, Lebanon once again finds itself at the center of regional tensions, this time spurred by Israeli attacks on Gaza last October. This situation has plunged the country into a state of latent war, exacerbated by the crimes committed by Israel both in South Lebanon and Gaza. This military escalation has created a climate of uncertainty and fear in Beirut, while the international community seems to remain silent in the face of these events.
Despite this tense climate, the Lebanese Minister of Tourism, Walid Nassar, underlines the solidarity found within the Lebanese population, now united behind its army and with a more resilient economy. In a context where diplomacy seems to be the only way out, the minister is confident about the possibility of finding a peaceful outcome to this conflict.
The question remains, however: Is Israel really seeking calm as it continues to deliberately target civilians in Lebanon and Gaza? The international community, in particular the UN, seems to lack firmness in the face of Israeli arrogance. Despite everything, Lebanon is banking on the efforts of international authorities to find a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
The consequences of this geopolitical situation are not long in coming, with some countries advising their nationals to avoid staying in Lebanon as a security measure. The tourism sector, a pillar of the Lebanese economy, is impacted by this crisis, although the country continues to attract a significantly higher number of visitors than its Israeli neighbor.
Despite the economic losses caused, Lebanon strives to maintain tourist attractiveness thanks to competitive prices and the loyalty of Lebanese expatriates, who represent a significant part of the country’s visitors. Pending a resolution to the conflict, the Minister of Tourism remains optimistic about an economic recovery which could see the number of tourists increase significantly, thus contributing to the country’s economic recovery.
Despite fears of a possible escalation of the conflict, Lebanon has shown increased resilience and determination since the 2006 war. With a strong national army and resistance, the country faces the Israeli occupation with firmness. Tel Aviv must deal with a Lebanon that is very different from that of two decades ago, ready to defend its sovereignty and dignity.
Pending a de-escalation of the regional situation, Lebanon is preparing to overcome the current challenges with determination, aware that peace and stability are the only guarantees of a prosperous future for the country and its population.
