University power crisis: Temporary closure following student protests

Students of Fatshimetrie have recently expressed their displeasure over the power crisis affecting the institution. Following a controversial increase in monthly bills by the local electricity company, many students were left in the dark, forcing the university to temporarily close its doors to avoid further disorder.

In a circular letter signed by the university’s registrar, Ademola Bobola, it was made clear that any breach of the ban on protest would result in immediate expulsion from the institution. This difficult decision is directly linked to the recurring power outages that have recently impacted student life on campus.

The sudden increase in billing by the local electricity company has put the university in a difficult financial situation, with monthly bills now reaching N250 million, up from N88 million previously. This impasse led to the disconnection of the two campuses of the university by the authorities of the electricity company.

In the face of student protests, the university Senate had to take the drastic decision to temporarily close the institution to preserve public order and ensure the safety of all. However, in the memo announcing the reopening of the university, the registrar made it clear that students will have to strictly adhere to the new guidelines on the supply, distribution and use of electricity on campus.

It was also stipulated that any student with unpaid tuition fees would be denied access to the examination halls, reinforcing the importance of paying fees up to date to be eligible for assessments.

Furthermore, students are strongly urged to behave responsibly and respectfully, avoiding any behaviour that is contrary to the rules and regulations of the university.

It is clear that this electricity crisis has highlighted the challenges faced by the university in managing resources and maintaining a conducive learning environment. It is imperative that the relevant authorities work together to find sustainable solutions and ensure the optimal functioning of the institution, while ensuring the well-being of students and staff.

Finally, this situation highlights the importance of transparency and communication between all stakeholders, in order to avoid future crises and foster a climate of harmony and cooperation within the university.
