Safeguarding the integrity of the Martyrs stadium: Construction suspended near the Kinshasa stadium

Fatshimetrie, August 11, 2024 – Construction work on a gas station near the famous Martyrs stadium in Kinshasa has been suspended following the intervention of the Minister of Sports of the Democratic Republic of Congo. During an inspection visit, the minister ordered the immediate cessation of work and demanded the evacuation of workers from the site.

This radical decision follows a series of inspections carried out by Minister Didier Budimbu, with the aim of preserving the integrity and security of the Martyrs stadium, an emblematic venue for Congolese sport. While the site manager tried to explain the reasons for building the service station, the minister highlighted the potential risks this represented for the thousands of people attending the stadium during sporting events.

Indeed, the Martyrs stadium is called upon to host international matches, including a match between the Leopards of the DRC and the national Syli of Guinea scheduled for September 2. In this context, it is imperative to guarantee the safety and hygiene of the premises in order to respect international standards and ensure the smooth running of these major sporting events.

Minister Budimbu is committed to restoring the image of the Martyrs stadium and making it one of the most beautiful sports venues on the continent. This decision to suspend the construction of the service station is part of a broader approach aimed at cleaning up and modernizing the entire sports complex.

In conclusion, priority is given to preserving the integrity of the Martyrs stadium and the safety of spectators and athletes. This decision demonstrates the desire of the Congolese authorities to promote sport and guarantee optimal conditions for the practice and celebration of sport within this Mecca of African football.
