Retailers face escalating criminal violence: a wake-up call for small business safety

The wave of thieves armed with guns and knives, demanding the keys to the safe containing money and gold, is an increasingly recurring image in our societies. This scene of violence and threat has unfortunately become the daily life of many shopkeepers, faced with the constant risk of finding themselves facing unscrupulous criminals.

In a shop, a shopkeeper suspected of having the keys in his possession denied any connection with them, and in response to his refusal, the criminals cruelly injured him with two pistol shots. His critical condition is currently in the hands of doctors, fighting for his survival. The other two shopkeepers, also victims of gunshot and stab wounds during the fierce struggle, are now in a stable condition, but forever marked by this violent attack.

Despite the resistance, the thieves managed to obtain the precious keys and escape with the money and gold amassed, hiding them in two bags to escape justice. A race against time has begun, with the police searching for suspects involved in this criminal act.

This recent break-in recalls other similar events, such as the judgment handed down last June by the Tarkwa court sentencing two soldiers and nine accomplices to a total of 252 years in prison for their involvement in the burglary of a gold buying company in Wassa Akropong, in the Western Region. Among the accused, individuals from diverse backgrounds – from retired soldiers to fetish priests, farmers and drivers – were found guilty of conspiracy and theft, despite their denials and pleas for clemency.

These stories of delinquency and burglary, increasingly frequent in certain regions, raise serious questions about the security of businesses and the tranquility of citizens. The authorities must therefore redouble their efforts to put an end to these criminal acts and ensure the protection of traders and the population in general. It is essential that preventive measures are put in place to deter criminals and preserve social peace.

In conclusion, the rise in crime, particularly violent robberies, is an urgent problem that requires immediate and coordinated action. Traders, on the front line of these attacks, deserve to be supported and protected by effective measures to ensure their safety and that of their property. Combating this scourge requires constant vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and the community in order to prevent such acts and ensure a climate of trust and security for all.
