A tragic night in Lubero: the crucial importance of road maintenance

Fatshimetrie, August 06, 2024: A dark night marked the territory of Lubero, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of seven people and injured three others. This event took place on the Nyabili-Lukanga axis, near the Bukenye groupement, in the Baswagha region.

The accident involved a Fuso brand vehicle transporting foodstuffs such as potatoes, onions and leeks, as well as about ten passengers. The vehicle was traveling from Masereka to Butembo when it was involved in this tragedy on the night of Monday, August 5 to Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

Local authorities have stressed that the deplorable state of the road played a crucial role in this fatal accident. Indeed, defective and poorly maintained road infrastructure can prove to be death traps for motorists and passengers.

The bodies of the victims have been transferred to Butembo for identification purposes, while investigations have been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
