The Ituri tragedy: the desperate exodus of a torn community

The hotbed of tension that engulfed Tshomia and its surroundings in Ituri has deeply affected the local community and thrown thousands of families into a desperate exodus. More than 70% of the population of this commercial center was forced to flee, leaving behind abandoned houses and paralyzed economic activities. A scene of desolation and uncertainty that continues to tear the social fabric of this once peaceful region.

The poignant accounts of residents who have sought refuge in Uganda, in Mahagi-Port, Kasenyi, or Bunia, tell stories of pain and helplessness in the face of growing insecurity. The brutal murder of six people, including soldiers, last week was the trigger for a spiral of violence and fear that has taken hold of people’s minds.

The localities of Sabe, Nyakova, Tsea, Kanyamukila, Tambaki and many others have been emptied of their population, leaving behind a heavy silence and deserted streets. Rumours of attacks circulating on social media have exacerbated panic and fuelled a permanent sense of anxiety among the remaining residents.

In addition to the human tragedy, the economic impact of this crisis is also devastating. Activities such as fishing and trade, which were the lifeblood of the local economy, have now been reduced to nothing. Markets are empty, boats remain at the dock, and economic life has ground to a halt, leaving dozens of families in extreme precariousness.

Faced with this critical situation, it is imperative that emergency measures be taken to restore security and stability in the Ituri region. Local and national authorities must act quickly to protect civilian populations, restore order and revive the economic activities that make these territories rich.

In this dark and tumultuous period, it is urgent to reach out to our brothers and sisters in distress, to support those who have lost everything and to rebuild a better future together. Because it is in these moments of profound crisis that the humanity and solidarity that unite us are revealed, beyond borders and differences.
