Fatshimetrie recently reported that security forces in Nigeria, including the Police Force, the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian Army, have jointly mobilized to ensure public safety. Other agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCos), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Amotekun Corps also participated in the massive operation.
The deployment of security forces started from the Police Headquarters in Eleyele and extended to Mokola roundabout, Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi-Gate, Iwo Road, Bodija and Challenge among other strategic points. The aim of the show of force was to sensitize the population on the preparedness of the security forces for a possible protest. The State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, stressed that the initiative was also aimed at maintaining the much-loved peace in the state, and protecting the lives and property of law-abiding citizens before, during and after any protest.
He said the security forces were not opposed to peaceful protests and recognised the right of individuals to express their discontent in a respectful manner. However, he warned that violence would not be tolerated, and that the security forces would intervene to restore order if need be.
Recalling previous protests, Commissioner Sonubi recalled that some of them unfortunately ended in violence, particularly the tragic events of the 2020 EndSARS protest. He stressed that the government is aware of the challenges facing Nigerians and is taking steps to address them. He recalled that the security forces, as citizens who are also affected by these challenges, urged everyone to exercise caution for the sake of peace and progress of the country.
This initiative by the security forces shows their willingness to maintain public order while respecting the rights of citizens. It is essential that the demonstrations take place in accordance with the law and in a climate of peace, in order to avoid any slippage. The security forces remain vigilant to ensure the safety of all and guarantee the stability of the nation.
