Kenneth Okonkwo ends political association with Obi: What does this mean for the future of the Workers’ Party?

In a statement dated Saturday, July 28, 2024, Kenneth Okonkwo announced the end of his political association with Obi and the Party of Workers.

A former spokesman of the party, he expressed his loss of confidence in Obi, stressing his inability to resolve crises within his political outfit.

Kenneth Okonkwo said the former Anambra State governor had shown a lack of capacity to build a solid platform needed to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The stance did not go down well with many of the ex-governor’s supporters, with some labeling him a spoiler and asking him to return to the All Progressives Congress.

Obi’s reaction

However, Obi urged his supporters to avoid demonizing him, saying the actor-turned-politician remains his dearest brother.

In a series of tweets posted on Monday, July 29, 2024, Obi cautioned those who label Kenneth Okonkwo as a spoiler, adding that the latter has always stood by him in difficult times and his loyalty and commitment cannot be underestimated.

Here is an excerpt from his statement: “Yesterday, I read the open letter of my dear brother Kenneth Okonkwo in which he expressed different views from mine on the clashes within our party. Today, I have seen various responses to the letter. I therefore wish to state categorically and emphatically that Barrister Okonkwo remains my beloved brother and a trusted ally. I caution against labeling him as a spoiler or making negative remarks against him.”

“Barr. Kenneth Okonkwo has always been by my side, through thick and thin, and his loyalty and commitment are undeniable. Disagreements and differing opinions are part and parcel of any group, society or movement, and it is essential to maintain a level of respect and decency even when we disagree.”

This political split raises questions about the unity and cohesion within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections. It is crucial for political leaders to show maturity and find ways to resolve differences for the good of the party and their supporters.
