In the suburbs of Dakar, a citizen initiative is emerging that promises to provide a safe haven for human rights defenders, whistleblowers, artists, and committed members of civil society. The Senegalese citizen collective, known as “Y’en a marre”, inaugurated its new project, Maison Karibu, on Friday, July 26, 2024.
Reflecting its desire to warmly welcome those on the front lines of the fight for justice and freedom, Maison Karibu symbolizes a space of safety and exchange for a dozen African personalities. The name of this place could not be more appropriate, the word “Karibu” in Swahili translates to “welcome”. A term that resonates as a call for solidarity and unity beyond borders.
Beyond Senegal’s legendary hospitality, Maison Karibu represents a concrete act of support for those who, too often, are forced to leave their country due to threats or persecution related to their commitment. This initiative is part of a changing political context, symbolized by recent democratic transitions and alternations in Africa.
The idea of Maison Karibu is not limited to offering temporary shelter, but aims to create a real place for exchange, sharing and strengthening struggles on the continent. Beyond welcoming human rights defenders, artists and members of civil society in danger, this project aspires to become a center of convergence of African activist energies.
By promoting meetings between committed actors and facilitating the sharing of experiences, Maison Karibu aspires to energize social and political struggles on the continent. This initiative is also part of an international perspective, in response to the increasing restrictions on asylum in many Western countries and the rise of movements hostile to humanitarian causes.
The initial two-year test phase of Maison Karibu suggests potential for growth and expansion. The long-term goal of the “Y’en a marre” collective is to be able to extend this refuge beyond the borders of Senegal, in order to offer a larger and more inclusive space to those who fight for a more just and united world.
In short, Maison Karibu embodies the hope of a future where solidarity and commitment to human rights transcend geographical barriers to be reflected as a beacon of hope for Africa and beyond. A beautiful initiative that deserves to be recognized and supported for its positive impact on the continental activist scene.
