The fragile security balance in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo appears to be under strain. The words of the provincial deputy, Chafi Musitu Mohindo, resonate like a cry of alarm in an environment marked by insecurity and constant threats weighing on the local population. Indeed, the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) find themselves at the center of concerns, both in terms of resources and training.
The observation is clear: harassment, murders of civilians, attacks on FARDC positions by armed groups are commonplace in the region. This already complex situation seems to be worsening with the emergence of new armed groups, which add an additional layer of tension and violence. It is becoming imperative for the authorities to take concrete measures to restore order and security in this part of the DRC.
Chafi Misitu Mohindo’s proposal to improve the socio-professional conditions of the DRC Armed Forces is relevant and deserves to be seriously studied. Indeed, well-trained, properly equipped and motivated soldiers are essential to ensure the protection of populations and the stability of the region. It is also necessary to put in place effective mechanisms to combat the recruitment of young people by armed groups, by offering credible and sustainable alternatives.
The situation of internally displaced people, fleeing violence, is another crucial aspect that must be taken into consideration. The presence of more than 168,000 displaced people in the Lubero territory highlights the scale of the humanitarian challenge facing the region. Concerted and rapid actions must be taken to meet the essential needs of this vulnerable population and to guarantee their safety.
Ultimately, the situation in North Kivu requires a comprehensive and multidimensional approach, combining military, humanitarian and economic efforts. It is imperative to strengthen the capacities of the FARDC, but also to address the root causes of the conflicts and violence plaguing the region. Only a holistic and integrated approach will make it possible to establish lasting peace and guarantee the security of the populations of North Kivu.
