Historic appointment at the head of ISTM-Kin: A new era begins for health in the DRC

Kinshasa, July 22, 2024 – The Higher Institute of Medical Techniques of Kinshasa (ISTM-Kin) is experiencing a new turning point with the appointment of a new general director, Professor Joséphine Ntumba. This decision was welcomed by the community of this public educational establishment during a general assembly which was recently held. The appointment of Professor Ntumba has raised hopes and expectations regarding the future and development of ISTM-Kin.

José Maximis Katako, president of the union delegation, expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Higher and University Education, Professor Marie-Thérèse Sombo, for this appointment. He also called for increased financial support from the Congolese government for the construction of modern infrastructure at ISTM-Kin, to remedy the operating difficulties encountered so far. Since moving to a new site more than a decade ago, ISTM-Kin has not benefited from state funding for its development, highlighting the urgent need for investment in its infrastructure.

The recent situation that led to the suspension of academic activities for four days has highlighted the challenges facing ISTM-Kin. However, with the arrival of the new director general, there is optimism about the possibility of overcoming these obstacles and continuing the institute’s mission which aims to train specialists in medical and paramedical sciences and techniques. In addition, ISTM-Kin is also responsible for organizing research to adapt new technologies to the realities of the Democratic Republic of Congo, while delivering diplomas in accordance with current legislation.

To ensure a prosperous future for ISTM-Kin, it is imperative that concrete steps are taken to ensure adequate funding, modernization of infrastructure, and enhancement of academic and research programs. The appointment of Professor Ntumba thus represents an opportunity to revitalize and strengthen this higher education establishment, to contribute to the progress of health in the DRC and to train the next generation of competent and committed health professionals.

In conclusion, the appointment of the new general director at ISTM-Kin marks the start of a new era for this key institute in the field of health in the DRC. It is essential that this appointment is followed by concrete actions and a continued commitment on the part of the authorities to support the development and excellence of ISTM-Kin, in order to meet the growing needs of the health sector and to contribute to the well-being of the Congolese population.
