Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s first hundred days as president of Senegal: between achievements and criticism

The new Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, elected in March 2024, took office and began a first assessment after 100 days at the head of the country. This assessment was an opportunity for him to present his achievements and define his priorities for the future, particularly with regard to youth employment. However, this period was also marked by criticism of the management of his predecessor, Macky Sall, on issues such as water and health.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s statements sparked reactions within the former president’s camp. Some pointed out the unpreparedness of the new leadership team, highlighting the lack of clarity regarding future political orientations. At the same time, other voices were raised to praise the president’s realism in the face of the economic and international challenges facing the country.

The Vice-President of the parliamentary group Benno Bokk Yakaar stressed the need for Bassirou Diomaye Faye to provide evidence to support his accusations regarding contracts awarded by the previous administration. She also highlighted the drop in prices of some basic commodities as a positive to be taken away from his first 100 days in office.

It is undeniable that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is now confronted with the realities of power and must deal with complex and numerous challenges. His ability to meet the expectations of the Senegalese while leading the country on the path to progress and stability will be closely scrutinized in the months to come.
