Mass arrests in Nigeria: decisive action to preserve peace on the Plateau

Lately, Plateau State, Nigeria, has seen a series of arrests of people suspected of cult activities. The State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, disclosed in a press conference that 178 suspects were apprehended, including 118 for cult-related activities, due to the celebration and initiation of new members by these groups. The other 60 individuals were arrested for various other crimes.

This wave of arrests is part of a global strategy put in place by the authorities to maintain peace on the Plateau. Commissioner Adesina noted that meetings with stakeholders in the troubled areas of the state had been held to foster peaceful coexistence. Thanks to intensive patrols, raids on criminal dens and increased surveillance resources, the situation was kept under control.

The effectiveness of law enforcement was reinforced by the collection of credible intelligence which made it possible to target the gathering places of criminal groups. This vigilance led to the arrest of the suspects by the special patrol unit, the EEPU, during a raid on an apartment used as a hideout by a sectarian organization.
