Road safety in Nigeria: an urgent call for caution and respect for traffic rules

The road transport sector in Nigeria has recently been the subject of growing concern due to increasing road accidents. Anthony Uga, FRSC Ogun Sector Commander, recently revealed disturbing figures in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota. According to his statements, a total of 238 deaths were recorded in road accidents, while 146 people were injured to varying degrees.

This sad record raises essential questions about road safety in the country. Uga identified the main causes of these accidents, highlighting excessive speed, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and traveling at night as key factors contributing to these regular tragedies. His main recommendation to motorists to prevent such tragedies is simple but fundamental: scrupulously respect traffic rules.

It is imperative that drivers become aware of their responsibility for road safety. Installing speed limit devices on vehicles is a tangible measure to reduce the risk of fatal accidents. Additionally, it is essential to avoid dangerous behaviors such as reckless overtaking that endanger the lives of road users.

Uga’s statement reiterates the importance of educating and raising awareness among drivers about the dangers of the road. Ultimately, road safety depends largely on the responsible behavior of everyone on the roads. It is essential that drivers adopt a cautious attitude, respect traffic rules and show courtesy to other road users.

In conclusion, there is an urgent need for increased attention to road safety in Nigeria. The authorities must put in place effective measures to prevent road accidents and protect the lives of citizens. Every driver has a vital role to play in keeping everyone safe on the roads. Vigilance, compliance with the rules and caution are the keys to avoiding tragedies and preserving precious lives.
