Congolese opposition against any modification of the Constitution in 2024

In the Congolese political landscape marked by tensions and power issues, the opposition is mobilizing against the prospect of a possible modification of the Constitution in 2024. The party dear to Martin Fayulu, the Commitment to Citizenship and Development (ECIDE), clearly positions itself against the possibility of an extension of the presidential mandate beyond 2028 for Félix Tshisekedi.

The secretary general of ECIDE, Devos Kitoko, recently firmly expressed his party’s determination to oppose any attempt to keep Félix Tshisekedi in power beyond his two constitutional mandates. Accusing the current president of embezzlement and mismanagement of public affairs, Devos Kitoko insists on the importance of respecting the Constitution and the democratic rules in force.

The question of extending the presidential mandate for Félix Tshisekedi deeply divides the Congolese political class. While some support a possible constitutional revision to allow the current president to remain in power, others, like ECIDE, vigorously assert their refusal to see the country take this path. For these opponents, the preservation of democratic alternation and respect for institutions is essential to guarantee the stability and progress of the Congo.

The rise of political protest against a possible constitutional reform illustrates the deep divisions within the Congolese political scene. While the debate on the political future of the country rages, ECIDE and its supporters ardently defend the idea that any change in the rules of the electoral game must be done with respect for democratic principles and the general interest.

By launching a mobilization campaign against the modification of the Constitution, ECIDE is showing its determination to make its voice heard and to defend fundamental democratic values. This head-on opposition to any attempt to perpetuate the power in place constitutes a strong signal sent to the authorities and to Congolese society as a whole.

Faced with these crucial issues for the future of the Congo, citizen and political mobilization is intensifying, testifying to a common desire to preserve democratic achievements and to guarantee a peaceful and equitable political transition. The battle for the future of Congolese democracy is far from over, and ECIDE is positioning itself on the front line to defend its convictions and principles.
