Kenyan youth mobilized: defying tax increases and demanding listening and dialogue

Fatshimetrie, June 24, 2024 – Kenyan youth are mobilizing against tax increases, expressing their anger at the public finance bill presented by President William Ruto. This protest movement, initiated almost a week ago, has grown across the country, bringing together thousands of young people determined to make their voices heard regarding the new taxes planned by the government.

William Ruto responded to this mobilization by affirming his availability for dialogue, recognizing the importance of listening to young people and working together to find solutions to the country’s economic problems. The President stressed the need for the new taxes to revive the Kenyan economy, which is facing heavy debt and a rising inflation rate.

The protests, largely peaceful, were the scene of spontaneous gatherings across the country, demonstrating the unity of Kenyan youth in the face of economic issues that directly concern them. Social networks were the breeding ground for this mobilization, allowing young people to organize themselves and make their demands heard.

Unfortunately, despite the pacifism of most protesters, violent incidents broke out, leading to arrests and even deaths. Organizations such as Amnesty International have condemned the violent crackdown by riot police and called for the release of arrested protesters.

For their part, Kenyan youth remain determined to continue their peaceful struggle to assert their rights and demands. The national strike planned for June 25, 2024 promises to be a strong moment of mobilization and protest.

In short, this wave of protests highlights the importance of mutual listening and dialogue between the authorities and youth to find lasting solutions to the economic challenges facing Kenya. Young Kenyans aspire to a better future and deserve to be heard and respected in their desire to contribute to the development of their country.
