Fatshimetrie is pleased to announce the inauguration of the extension of line 14 of the Paris metro, a major event which will connect Saint-Denis in the north of Paris to Orly airport in the south. After months of hard work, this extension of line 14 is finally ready to welcome its first passengers, just in time for the Olympic Games which will take place this summer in Paris.
This new 28 km long route has eight new stations and will cross 11 municipalities, thus offering a new transport option to residents of the Paris region. Line 14 will become the region’s first “supermetro”, with a planned capacity of one million passengers per day by mid-2025.
The completion of this project represented a major challenge for RATP, the main project manager, which had to coordinate numerous aspects, including the extension of the line, the modernization of the automation system and the renewal of the rolling stock. . This technical feat made it possible to create a real link between the historic network and the future Grand Paris Express network, with connections planned with lines 15, 16, 17 and 18 under construction.
In addition to its importance for the Olympic Games, the new line 14 will facilitate travel for residents of the region by serving strategic locations such as the athletes’ village, the Stade de France, the aquatic center and Orly airport. Thanks to this fast and efficient connection, users will be able to reach these key destinations while avoiding possible congestion on other transport lines.
Despite the challenges encountered throughout the project, particularly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, RATP stayed the course by working tirelessly to meet deadlines. Temporary closures of the line during weekends, school holidays and evenings enabled the work to be completed on time, ensuring the line opened before the Olympic Games.
The investment made for this project, i.e. 3.5 billion euros financed by the Société des Grands Projets, will make it possible to meet the growing demand for public transport in the Paris region. This extension will benefit nearly 260,000 residents south of Paris, offering an alternative to the private car and contributing to the reduction of road congestion.
In conclusion, the extension of line 14 of the Paris metro represents a major step forward in terms of public transport in the region. This new link will offer users a fast, efficient and environmentally friendly means of travel, thus helping to improve the quality of life of residents of the Paris region.
