Improving the working conditions of fishermen at the Kituku Modern Fishery in Goma: a crucial issue for the fishing industry

Fatshimetrie, June 23, 2024 – The importance of the working conditions of fishermen at the Kituku Modern Fishery, located in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has recently raised concerns, particularly in anticipation of the International Day fishes. Local players in this industry emphasize the need to put in place measures to improve the working conditions and safety of fishermen on the lake.

The managing administrator of the fishery, Jean Biamungu Mingingo, insists on the importance of training fishermen to modernize their practices and increase their productivity. He suggests that seminars be organized to raise workers’ awareness of good practices, as well as to equip them with the tools necessary for more efficient fishing. This initiative aims to enable fishermen to compete with other, more advanced fishing industries.

For his part, the president of the Kituku fishermen’s association, Ezechiel Shamavu, highlights the issue of worker safety. Concerned about the protection of fishermen on the lake, he underlines the importance of forming a group dedicated to ensuring security, in collaboration with local authorities, in particular the maritime police. Shamavu calls for support from the authorities to strengthen safety on the lake and provide fishermen with adequate tools, such as nets, to ensure optimal working conditions.

This request to improve the working conditions of fishermen at the Kituku Modern Fishery highlights the importance of supporting this vital sector of the local economy. By investing in the training and equipment of fishermen, it is possible to guarantee the sustainability of fishing activity while ensuring the safety and well-being of workers. It is up to the authorities to respond to these legitimate concerns and support initiatives aimed at professionalizing and modernizing the fishing industry in Goma.

Taking these issues into account will help strengthen the local economy, preserve the lake’s natural resources and provide sustainable prospects for the region’s fishing communities. By investing in the future of fishing in Goma, it is possible to create a thriving and environmentally friendly sector, while ensuring a sustainable lifestyle for current and future generations.
