Nigeria’s Cholera Scourge: The Dangers of Uncertified Food Products

**The Scourge of Cholera in Nigeria: Investigation into the Origins and Impacts**

Over the past month, Nigeria has witnessed a surge in cholera cases, with death figures rising in 30 affected states. Lagos, the epicenter of this bacterial disease, is facing an alarming situation with three districts in particular, Lagos Island, Kosofe and Eti-Osa, accounting for more than 50% of the reported cases.

Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Advisor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, revealed in an interview with Fatshimetrie that the situation is critical. According to her, as of Friday, June 21, 2024, 24 deaths were recorded among the 35 confirmed cases and 417 suspected cases recorded across Lagos State.

Cholera, a potentially fatal disease, can be triggered by a variety of factors, including consumption of contaminated food and water. Government authorities conducted a thorough investigation and discovered a common link between infected people in the three aforementioned districts.

It emerged that those affected had consumed tiger nut drinks before being diagnosed. After extensive testing, it appeared that this drink could be the cause of the spread of the disease. However, authorities were unable to identify the producer of the drink, as none of the containers collected bore certification from the National Food and Drug Control Agency (NAFDAC).

Faced with this critical situation, it is imperative to raise awareness among the population about the risks associated with the consumption of uncertified products and to strengthen food safety standards. Collaboration between health authorities, food manufacturers and regulatory agencies is crucial to preventing the spread of deadly diseases such as cholera.

It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the food and drinks consumed are safe and meet quality standards to protect public health. In this period of health crisis, attention and vigilance are required to avoid new tragedies linked to food safety gaps.
