The current situation facing the Western Equatoria State region of South Sudan is of deep concern. Indeed, a team of United Nations peacekeepers, accompanied by local officials, visited a local community to assess security. This mission comes in response to the influx of internally displaced people into the region, fleeing recent episodes of inter-communal violence in neighboring Tambura County.
The testimonies of displaced residents highlight the human tragedy playing out in the region. Eunice Philimona, one of those displaced by the clashes, recounts her escape into the bushes and her exhausted arrival in Nadiangere. His poignant story highlights the precarious conditions faced by these displaced people, deprived of access to food, health services, education and security.
The situation in Nadiangere is particularly critical, with resources already limited to meet the needs of the local population. Residents deplore the lack of educational, health and security structures in the region. Faced with this humanitarian crisis, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has taken measures to support the local community. By financing the construction of a primary school in the region, conducting patrols and working closely with humanitarian partners, the Blue Helmets are working to provide assistance to displaced people and the population affected by the violence.
This mobilization of the United Nations and local actors is essential to alleviate the suffering of populations affected by intercommunal conflicts in South Sudan. It is imperative to strengthen humanitarian aid, guarantee the security of displaced people and put in place sustainable structures to meet the basic needs of affected communities. International solidarity and joint action are key elements to restore peace and stability in the Western Equatoria State region.
