In Fatshimetrie’s latest report, a searing update on news in Sudan reveals a meteoric advance by the paramilitaries of General Mohammed Hamdan Dogolo, alias Hemedti, in the region. After consolidating their control over a large part of Darfur, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) extended their influence by taking control of the town of el-Fula, capital of West Kordofan, on June 20, 2024.
The chaotic hours of the takeover demonstrated the sudden withdrawal of the army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, leaving the RSF to seize the city’s main buildings, including the army headquarters and the seat of the provincial government. Subsequently, a new governor was appointed for West Kordofan, confirming the paramilitaries’ desire to exercise administrative control over the region, thus following the pattern established in Darfur.
This symbolic conquest of el-Fula is of major strategic importance, highlighting the progress of the RSF in the conflict. In addition, the presence of the Abyei region in West Kordofan, a disputed territory rich in oil fields, raises significant economic and geopolitical issues.
Since the start of hostilities in April 2023, Sudan has been the scene of a devastating crisis, characterized by massive human losses and large-scale population displacements. The alarming UN figures reflect a critical humanitarian situation, highlighting the urgency of an adequate international response to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.
In this context of heightened tensions, it is imperative to examine the consequences of this escalation of violence in Sudan. The regional and international repercussions of this armed conflict and the growing needs for humanitarian assistance underline the urgency of concerted action to prevent a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe.
In short, the advance of the RSF in el-Fula marks a crucial step in a complex and deadly conflict, calling for urgent mobilization of the international community to put an end to the suffering of vulnerable populations in Sudan.
