*Fatshimetrie: An assessment of the fight against cholera in Lagos*
The city of Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital, has recently seen an increase in cholera cases. This increase was expected following the Eid el-Kebir celebrations, during which large meetings took place. The results of the health authorities are alarming, with 401 cases recorded across the city, mainly on Lagos Island, Kosofe and Eti Osa.
Faced with this situation, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Advisor to the Governor of Lagos State on Health, spoke to inform the population. She stressed that if the number of suspected cases is decreasing in certain areas, in particular thanks to the measures taken by the government and surveillance efforts, it is essential that everyone remains vigilant.
Authorities are investigating to identify the source of the contamination by taking samples of water, food and drinks. Surveillance actions are reinforced in affected communities, and precautionary measures are taken in schools to protect children.
It is essential that residents practice good hand hygiene practices and participate in community cleaning activities to stem the spread of cholera. If you experience symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general malaise or fever, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Cholera treatment is provided free of charge in all public health facilities. The Lagos State Government is committed to providing quality and affordable healthcare to its residents, and would like to commend the commitment of local, national and international partners in the fight against the epidemic.
In conclusion, the battle against cholera in Lagos is far from over, but thanks to the mobilization of all stakeholders involved, a glimmer of hope is emerging. Health professionals, local authorities, partner organizations and volunteers are working around the clock to protect people and keep Lagos safe. It is essential that everyone contributes to this collective effort to defeat this disease and preserve the health of all.
