**Kwango bushfires: Call for collective responsibility**
In Kwango, in the Kwilu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the dry season is unfortunately often marked by devastating bush fires, endangering the lives of residents and the surrounding biodiversity. Recently, five members of the same family were tragically victims of these fires, highlighting the need to establish adequate prevention measures and raise public awareness about environmental protection.
According to information collected by local authorities, the tragedy took place near the village of Kimvula, where a father and his four children perished in the destructive flames of an uncontrollable bush fire. Initial investigations suggest that the fire was started by a hunter in search of prey, without realizing the dramatic consequences of his action.
This tragedy highlights the urgency of putting in place strict security measures to regulate agricultural activities during the dry season. Indeed, many farmers have gotten into the habit of burning plant debris after clearing their fields, a risky practice that can quickly degenerate into uncontrollable fires. It is imperative that the authorities take preventive measures to limit these risks, in particular by prohibiting bush fires without prior authorization from the competent services.
Symphorien Kwengo, Vice-President of the Kwango civil society consultation framework, launched an urgent call for collective responsibility, emphasizing the need for increased awareness among farmers and local populations.
