Doyin Okupe’s change in political attitude: a major turning point in the Nigerian political landscape

The Nigerian political landscape is experiencing turmoil with the recent statements of Doyin Okupe, a veteran of the local political scene. A former member of the Labor Party movement and ex-general campaign director of Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, Okupe recently made headlines following his defense of President Bola Tinubu, hinting at a possible change of allegiance.

After his resignation from the Labor Party and reports of an alleged fraud affair with the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), Okupe was the target of criticism from some of Obi’s supporters, accusing him of treason towards Nigeria.

Despite these attacks, Okupe remains firm in his convictions and affirms his commitment to a united and indivisible Nigeria. In a message posted on his X page, he said: “No matter the insults, intolerance and incivility, I will remain true to my convictions as a true nationalist. We have invested too much in each other to go back on our commitment to fraternity and national unity. This new wave of bigotry will not undo already established friendships.

In response to this message, Omoyele Sowore recalled an earlier discussion with Okupe and highlighted their political disagreement. Sowore revealed that during a call in 2022, Okupe tried to convince him to support Obi, but Sowore declined the offer, highlighting the politician’s lack of support for progressive causes.

This controversy between Okupe and Obi’s supporters illustrates the growing political tensions in Nigeria and highlights the complexity of alliances in politics. Okupe, by defending President Tinubu, may well be redrawing his political course and moving away from his former affiliations. The rest of the events will remain to be followed in this constantly evolving political landscape.
