Deadly attacks by ADF rebels in Beni, North Kivu: Terror and anger in civil society

Fatshimetrie, June 7 – The recent series of deadly attacks attributed to ADF rebels in Beni territory, North Kivu, has plunged civil society into anxiety and anger. In the space of three days, 35 civilians were coldly murdered, spreading terror among the local population.

The escalation of violence reached its peak with the latest attack in Makodu on June 6, where seven civilians lost their lives and two homes were reduced to ashes. This barbarity has forced many families to flee their homes, desperately seeking refuge and safety.

The previous days have been no less deadly, with gruesome discoveries in Munuzi and along the Loulo River. Testimonies report victims found tied up before being executed. The scenes of horror continue, despite the military intervention aimed at containing the damage.

These bloody attacks are unfortunately not isolated incidents. Indeed, 16 civilians have died in Masau in similar circumstances, with villagers taken hostage, businesses ransacked, and pharmacies looted. Terror is creeping into the daily lives of the inhabitants of Beni-Mbau who are struggling to find respite.

The toll is heavy, with 35 souls lost in just three days. Indignation is growing within civil society, which is demanding concrete measures from the military authorities to put an end to these atrocities and protect civilians. It is imperative that effective strategies be deployed to guarantee the safety of the inhabitants and restore the peace that has languidly disappeared.

While waiting for an adequate response from the armed forces, the populations of Beni-Mbau remain in the grip of fear and uncertainty, hoping that light will finally chase away the darkness that has descended on their territory.
