African Football in full transformation for the 2024/2025 Season

In the year 2024, the African football landscape is in turmoil, with major changes announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) concerning the Confederation Cup. The recent decision to cancel the second additional preliminary round of the competition marks a turning point in the organization of African Interclubs.

From now on, teams eliminated in the second round of the CAF Champions League will no longer be transferred to the Confederation Cup. This new directive simplifies the path for clubs qualified for the second preliminary round of the competition, who will now have direct access to the group stage. This change in format aims to make the competition more competitive and to promote the performances of the teams involved.

The 2024/2025 Interclub season therefore promises to be intense, with a start scheduled between August 16 and 18, 2024 for the preliminary round. The group stages will take place between October and December 2024. The knockout stages, as well as the grand final of both competitions, will take place between March and May 2025, promising thrilling clashes until the end.

Furthermore, CAF has also revised the registration criteria for competing clubs. The 12 highest ranked member associations according to the CAF index will now be able to enter two teams in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup. This opens new perspectives for African clubs and strengthens the competitiveness of Interclubs.

Player registration periods for the 2024/2025 season have also been clarified, providing teams with a clear roadmap for managing their squad. These deadlines will allow clubs to best prepare for their participation in competitions and to align their best elements on the field.

Ultimately, these changes made by CAF aim to boost African football, provide more opportunities for clubs on the continent and strengthen the appeal of Interclubs to football enthusiasts. The 2024/2025 season therefore promises to be full of promise, with memorable posters and sporting exploits to be expected. African football fans can already prepare to experience an exceptional season, rich in twists and turns and emotions on the continent’s pitches.
