Garry Conille was officially inaugurated Monday as the new Prime Minister of Haiti. This ceremony took place at the Prime Minister’s palace in Port-au-Prince, the country’s capital.
He thus succeeds the interim Patrick Boisvert. At 58, Garry Conille now shares executive power with the Presidential Council. Upon coming to power, he called on political factions to put aside their differences for the greater good of the nation.
“We will see the interests of different individual groups put aside for the greater interest of the nation,” he assured.
Garry Conille briefly served as Prime Minister of Haiti from 2011 to 2012. He now finds himself facing a monumental task that includes reforming institutions and combating gang crime.
The president of the Transitional Council, Edgard Leblanc-Fils, stressed in a short speech the need for “credible, free and democratic” elections. In addition to choosing the Prime Minister, the Transition Council’s mission is to organize presidential elections before the start of 2026.
The Caribbean country is still awaiting the arrival of the Kenyan-led international police force.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Garry Conille had served as UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023. He studied medicine and public health and contributed to the development of health care in disadvantaged communities in Haiti. He also helped coordinate reconstruction efforts after the devastating 2010 earthquake.
According to the Miami Herald, he returned to Haiti from Miami on June 1. His professional career and his commitment to improving living conditions in Haiti make Garry Conille a key player for the future of the country.
