People living with disabilities once again expressed their discontent in front of the Palais du Peuple, seat of the Congolese Parliament, on Monday June 3, 2024. Their demonstration aimed to protest against the retention of Irène Esambo within the Judith Suminwa government. Indeed, these people encounter considerable difficulties in their social and professional lives, despite the existence of a ministry dedicated to them since the arrival of Félix Tshisekedi as president.
The demonstrators deplore the non-compliance with the laws in place supposed to improve their daily lives. They demand better application of the measures already established and request the involvement of the National Assembly for a round table aimed at implementing these provisions and improving their living conditions.
Faced with these legitimate demands, Vital Kamerhe, President of the National Assembly, is committed to supporting people living with disabilities. He promised to convey their grievances and advocate for the implementation of Organic Law No. 22/003 of May 3, 2022, which provides for better protection and promotion of their rights.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, with a large population of disabled people, adopted this law to meet the specific needs of this category of citizens. However, its effective application remains a challenge, requiring collective mobilization to guarantee respect for the fundamental rights of all.
In this context, the political commitment of President Félix Tshisekedi in favor of people living with disabilities is crucial. It is imperative to finalize the organic and functional frameworks necessary to ensure the full implementation of this law and achieve the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities.
In conclusion, Congolese society must become aware of the importance of inclusion and equity for all its members, including people living with disabilities. It is essential to put in place concrete and lasting actions to guarantee their full social and professional integration, and to ensure that their rights are respected and promoted.
