The increase in the price of taxi and motorcycle rides in Matadi in June 2019: Between tensions and economic adjustments

The increase in the price of taxi and motorbike rides in Matadi in June 2019 sparked a wave of indignation among public transport users. This increase, from 600 to 700 Congolese francs, was decided during a crisis meeting following the drivers’ strike.

This decision was taken due to the increase in fuel prices observed recently in the city of Matadi. Indeed, since last weekend, the price of a liter of gasoline has increased from 3,250 to 3,500 Congolese francs. This increase has had a direct impact on the operating costs of taxis and motorbikes, hence the need to adjust the fare.

The crisis meeting, chaired by the provincial Minister of Transport, was attended by various transport associations, such as the Association of Drivers of Congo (ACCO) and the Association of Motorcyclists of Kongo-Central (OMOKOC). These associations expressed concern about the financial difficulties faced by their members due to rising fuel prices.

Furthermore, the strike by drivers and motorcyclists, marked by a “taxi-free day”, aimed to obtain a more significant increase in the price of rides, from 600 to 1,000 Congolese francs. The protesters also denounced the police harassment they often face in the exercise of their profession, making their work even more difficult.

This situation highlights the challenges faced by actors in the public transport sector in Matadi. Fluctuating fuel prices and economic pressures jeopardize the financial viability of drivers and motorcyclists, requiring price adjustments to ensure their livelihoods.

In conclusion, the increase in the price of taxi and motorbike rides in Matadi in June 2019 reflects the economic realities faced by urban transporters. It is essential to find a balance between the needs of workers in the sector and the expectations of users, while ensuring decent working conditions and quality service for all.
