Glimmer of hope in Masisi: Prospects after the fighting in Sake and Bweremana

In a context marked by intense clashes between the Congolese armed forces, the Wazalendo and the M23/RDF coalition in Sake, the territory of Masisi experienced a relative calm this Saturday. After two days of fierce fighting, calm seems to be gradually returning to the region, offering a glimpse of a glimmer of hope for residents devastated by the violence. This pause in hostilities provides a temporary respite for displaced civilians and volunteers involved in defending their lands.

The head of the Kamuronza group, Mwami Bauma Bitsibu Primo, underlines the control maintained by the FARDC and the Wazalendo over Sake, while expressing his concern for the disastrous humanitarian situation faced by the displaced in their quest for refuge in Goma. The most basic needs are not sufficiently met, notably depriving children of their right to education in a precarious and uncertain climate.

Furthermore, in Bweremana, where clashes recently broke out on the Ndumba and Kashingamutwe hills, minds are turning towards the possibility of regaining control by loyalist forces. Thanks to a relative lull observed after the intense fighting, the local population is beginning to regain a semblance of normality, resuming their daily activities despite the trauma suffered.

The testimonies collected in the field reflect both the resilience of local communities and the urgency of more sustained humanitarian action to meet the essential needs of populations affected by the violence. The loss of a South African soldier during the fighting reveals the complexity and challenges of the ongoing clashes, highlighting the need for effective coordination to ensure the security and protection of civilians.

Ultimately, the current situation calls for deep reflection on the implications of armed conflicts for civilian populations, as well as the efforts that must be made to foster a lasting return to peace and stability in the region. The commitment of different actors, whether military, humanitarian or civilian, is crucial to overcoming persistent challenges and paving the way for a safer and more prosperous future for all.
