Recent court hearings reveal justice challenges over juvenile crime in Ibadan

Recent court hearings for youths accused of assault and robbery in Ibadan, Nigeria, raise questions about security and law enforcement in the region. The incident, which occurred in the Ojoo area, involves teenagers and highlights the challenges the community faces regarding juvenile crime.

The teens, whose addresses have not been released, are charged with conspiracy, assault, willful damage and theft. Despite the charges against them, the defendants pleaded not guilty, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation to establish the truth in this case.

The incident reportedly took place on May 20 at around 6:50 p.m. in Ibadan, and involved the destruction of a Firman power generator and a fuel dispenser worth N10 million belonging to Omakad fuel station. Additionally, the defendants are accused of stealing N2.8 million belonging to the petrol station, as well as physically assaulting Jubril Ganiyu and Miss Alimat Tiamiyu, causing injuries to the victims.

These acts are against the existing criminal laws of Oyo State, contravening Sections 516, 355 and 390(9) of the Penal Code. In response to the charges, the presiding judge, Mrs. Sukurat Yusuf, granted bail of N1 million to each of the accused, with two creditworthy sureties for each.
