The persistence of violence in eastern DRC: Call for unity for a peaceful future

The territory of Beni, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is once again the scene of a tragedy. Two lives were taken in a savage ambush by rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) group on the road linking Eringeti to Kainama. This tragedy, which occurred on May 30, 2024, bears witness to the persistent insecurity in the region, endangering the lives of residents and travelers.

According to the governor’s delegate stationed in Eringeti, the convoy of vehicles attacked was carrying innocent passengers, collateral victims of an armed conflict that is beyond their control. The assailants, without mercy, opened fire, causing the death of two people and seriously injuring another. In addition to this barbaric act, a car was set on fire, leaving behind a sinister testimony to the violence that reigns on these roads.

The response of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) was immediate; they took charge of the situation to restore order and ensure the safety of citizens. The temporary suspension of traffic helped to control the risks and ensure that more lives were not lost in this spiral of violence.

However, this new tragic episode once again raises the issue of security in eastern DRC. Civilians, already tested by years of conflict and violence, deserve to live in peace and dignity. Local and national authorities must redouble their efforts to eradicate the scourge of armed groups that sow terror and chaos in the region.

In this time of mourning and dismay, it is vital not to give up. The fight against insecurity and terrorism must be an absolute priority, in order to ensure a safer and more prosperous future for all the inhabitants of the region. It is time to turn the page on violence and build a better future, based on peace, solidarity and respect for the fundamental rights of each individual.

In memory of the victims of this ambush and all the victims of violence in the DRC, let us commit to working together for a future where human life is respected and protected. We are all responsible for building a fairer, safer and more united world, where peace will finally be a reality for all.
