Ezra: When authenticity transcends the screen

In the world of cinema, each film brings its share of diversity and originality, but some stand out for their innovative approach. This is the case of the film “Ezra”, directed by Tony Goldwyn and starring the young actor William A Fitzgerald in the lead role. This feature film tells the touching story of a comedian, Max Bernal, played by Bobby Cannavale, who goes on a road trip with his 11-year-old autistic son, Ezra.

What makes “Ezra” truly unique is that the screenplay was written by Tony Spiridakis, the father of an autistic son, and the actor who plays Ezra, William A Fitzgerald, is autistic himself. This authentic dimension adds additional depth and sensitivity to the film. Indeed, the choice to call on an actor truly concerned by the subject addressed creates a stronger connection with the public and allows a more faithful representation of reality.

The filmmakers’ commitment to ensuring authentic portrayal of autism doesn’t stop there. Throughout production, they made sure to include people with personal or family experience of neurodiversity at all levels of the cast and crew. External consultants, such as Alex Plank and Elaine Hall, were also consulted to ensure the accuracy of the artistic and narrative choices.

“For ‘Ezra,’ having a neurodivergent actor in the lead role was essential,” says Tony Goldwyn. “But beyond that, we developed a network of people with whom we could interact to ensure we remained true to the reality of life with autism.” This concern for authenticity is reflected in the testimony of a young spectator who confided that the film perfectly represented his own experience.

The artistic and social approach of “Ezra” makes it much more than simple cinematic entertainment. It is a committed work that highlights the diversity and complexity of individuals affected by autism, while offering a fair and emotionally charged representation. Through this film, Tony Goldwyn and his team open a door to a better understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity in contemporary society.
