On May 28, the town of Lokoja was adorned with color and excitement to celebrate the 10th anniversary of World Menstrual Hygiene Day. This initiative, dedicated to raising awareness and educating on the importance of menstrual hygiene, was marked by various events organized by the Heal for Africa Initiative (HFAI) and bearing the theme: “#ARulesFitWorld”.

Under the azure sky of this memorable day, Sefinat, a fervent activist for the cause, took the floor to salute the work of Dr. Kelechi Okoro, founder of the HFAI, for her contribution to the promotion of menstrual hygiene in the ‘State. In a vibrant speech, she affirmed her unwavering support for this initiative and outlined her plans to improve menstrual hygiene and sexual and reproductive health services in the region.

The strong message she delivered leaves no room for doubt: “Rules should never be an obstacle to education, health or personal development. As a mother and leader, I am committed to ensure that every girl and woman in Kogi can manage their periods with dignity and confidence.”

She also called on parents to give utmost importance to menstrual hygiene education for their daughters. “Parents have a crucial role in the development of their children. It is essential to provide your daughter with accurate information and support about periods. This helps them understand their bodies and manage their menstrual health effectively. Let’s create an environment open and supportive where our girls feel comfortable discussing their menstrual needs.”

On the side of Dr. Folasade Arike, Secretary of State of the Government, calls for action in favor of menstrual hygiene have multiplied. She urged other women leaders to join the movement and encouraged government officials and stakeholders to mobilize to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene, especially in schools and underprivileged communities.

“Let’s work together to ensure that all girls have access to menstrual hygiene products, education and adequate facilities. Our collective efforts can break down barriers and create a world where periods are no longer a barrier, but a stage of life to celebrate.”

The clear and committed words of these inspiring women resonate as a call to action for better management of menstrual hygiene. Their determination to promote the education and health of women and girls is a beacon of hope for a brighter, healthier future for all..

On this special day, when eyes turn to the importance of breaking the taboo of rules and promoting a more inclusive and respectful society, the vibrant images of Lokoja will remain engraved in the memories, testifying to the commitment of all to build a world that truly fits the rules.
