Aquaculture development in Kindu: PADRIR supports local fish production

The Inclusive and Resilient Rural Development Support Program (PADRIR) is actively engaged in promoting fish rearing in the town of Kindu and the territories of Kailo and Pangi, located in the province of Maniema. This initiative aims to support local fish farmers by providing claria and tilapia seeds to strengthen aquaculture production, essential for economic development and food security in the region.

During a recent visit carried out by PADRIR and the National Fisheries and Livestock Development Service (SENADEPA) to the 18 hatchery stations benefiting from the program, it was noted that the fish are developing satisfactorily. However, beneficiaries have expressed legitimate concerns regarding their additional needs to ensure the sustainability of their fish farming activities.

Some fish farmers highlighted their urgent need for adequate working equipment to optimize their production. A beneficiary highlighted the importance of a memorandum of understanding in order to guarantee the continuity and success of their projects. It is clear that for these inclusive and resilient rural development initiatives to thrive, it is essential to provide technical and material support tailored to the needs of local fish farmers.

Difficulties with feeding the fish were also mentioned, with insufficient quantities of food to properly feed the fry. To compensate for this insufficiency, fish farmers had to resort to local foods to supplement the rations provided by the project. This situation highlights the importance of ensuring an adequate supply of feed to ensure healthy growth of fish.

Faced with these challenges, Modeste Maleshene, advisor in charge of programming, monitoring and evaluation at PADRIR, is committed to finding rapid solutions adapted to the needs of beneficiaries. The upcoming construction of a hatchery in Kindu, which will allow the production of fry and the manufacture of feed on site, constitutes a major step forward in responding to the concerns of fish farmers. This initiative will not only promote the autonomy of local stakeholders but will also strengthen the viability of aquaculture projects in the region.

In conclusion, the support provided by PADRIR to fish farmers in Kindu and surrounding areas represents an important step towards inclusive and resilient rural development. By investing in fish rearing and responding to the needs of local stakeholders, this program contributes to strengthening food security, stimulating the local economy and promoting the sustainability of aquaculture practices in the province of Maniema.
