The New Congolese Civil Society (NSCC) of the Ruwenzori sector, located in the Beni territory, has sounded the alarm regarding the dilapidated wooden bridge which spans the Lume River, near the village of Balombi. According to Meleki Mulala, coordinator of this civic structure, this crucial bridge is seriously damaged due to the heavy rains which regularly fall on the region.
The waters of the river began to eat away at the fragile supports of the bridge, thus endangering the safety of users. Although this bridge has failed for some time, it remains in service, which is extremely concerning. Meleki Mulala emphasizes that the situation is critical, because this bridge is essential to ensure traffic between the towns of Butembo and Beni, as well as to the border with Uganda via the town of Kasindi-Lubiriha.
The need to urgently rehabilitate this wooden bridge is highlighted by the NSCC, due to its socio-economic importance to the region. Indeed, many residents and traders depend on this road axis for their daily activities. User safety is also a priority, as large vehicles must respect tonnage limitations to cross safely.
It is essential that the authorities take rapid measures to repair this bridge and ensure the flow of road traffic. Neglect of this vital infrastructure could have dramatic consequences, both economically and in terms of citizen security. By raising drivers’ awareness of the risks involved and implementing sustainable solutions, it is possible to guarantee the sustainability of this essential communication route for the Ruwenzori region.
The mobilization of civil society and local authorities is crucial to guarantee the safety and well-being of the region’s inhabitants. By taking preventative measures and investing in sustainable infrastructure, it is possible to prevent disasters and promote the economic and social development of these vulnerable communities. The wooden bridge over the Lume River is much more than just a crossing, it is a vital link for an entire territory that cannot be ignored.
