Nigeria embarks on construction of coastal superhighway to boost economic growth

At the official groundbreaking for the commencement of construction works of the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Super-Highway and the design of the 1000km Sokoto-Badagry Super-National Highway, which took place on Sunday in Lagos, Tinubu’s speech highlighted the critical importance of this project in terms of connectivity, economic growth and improved quality of life for residents of coastal areas.

Beyond a simple road project, Tinubu stressed that this initiative represented a symbol of hope, unity and prosperity for Nigeria. He highlighted the positive impact that this superhighway would have on employment, providing millions of direct positions in coastal states and easier access for more than 30 million citizens to production and marketing centers.

The President stressed the importance of investing in sustainable infrastructure capable of benefiting future generations, despite the temporary difficulties Nigeria is currently experiencing.

This coastal infrastructure will be closely linked to the Lekki Free Trade Zones, deep sea ports and the Dangote Refinery, providing considerable economic potential for local communities and coastal states.

Tinubu said his administration was intensifying efforts to accelerate industrialization, boost economic growth and create employment opportunities for Nigerians, with the aim of overcoming current challenges and marking significant progress in the country.

The Senate speech, delivered by Godswill Akpabio, hailed these initiatives as a real turning point in infrastructure policy, even predicting a second term for Tinubu. He highlighted previous achievements in student loans and the rehabilitation of dilapidated roads, which have earned the president praise as an infrastructure leader in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Minister of Public Works, Senator Dave Umahi, reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to carrying out this project and preserving national assets, while emphasizing the importance of compensation paid to populations impacted by the works.

Overall, this coastal superhighway and the supernational highway project represent a giant step towards economic development, regional connectivity and the creation of new opportunities for local communities and investors. The commitment of government and stakeholders to bring this project to fruition points to a bright future for Nigeria.
