The suspense ends in Ituri as the provincial deputies elected the four senators during a historic session on Friday May 24, 2024. Democracy has therefore spoken and the choices of the elected officials have been revealed in broad daylight.

Among the elected candidates is Noëlla Manzalo, supported by the Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC). This newcomer to politics was able to win eight votes and share victory with businessman Idi Tabani Zacharia, originally from the Aru territory.

National MP and Deputy Defense Minister Samy Adubango was also elected with six votes, while Aru native Daniel Banio received five votes, leaving Senator Tibasima Mbogemu Ateeinyi, an independent candidate, on the sidelines.

However, the disappointment was palpable on the side of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS/Tshisekedi). Despite the seven provincial deputies lined up, the President’s party failed to convince and had to suffer a crushing defeat. Prominent political figures in the region like Dieudonné Amuli, Pacifique Ketha and Médard Autsai were unable to rally the votes of provincial deputies.

This election provoked contrasting reactions, between the jubilations of the victorious elected officials and the regrets of the unsuccessful candidates. The next elections for the post of governor promise to be just as intense and crucial.

While waiting for the official results to be validated, all eyes are on the political future of Ituri, a province rich in challenges and diversity. The results of this election testify to the vitality of Congolese democracy and the importance of the choices made by the representatives of the people. The challenges awaiting elected senators will be numerous, but it is through responsibility and transparency that they will be able to best serve their community and their nation.

Fatshimetrie will therefore remain at the heart of Congolese political news, ready to support its readers in understanding these major issues which shape the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
