Horror and mourning in Goma: The tragic consequences of the bombings on the sites of displaced people

Fatshimetrie is a committed information website that closely follows developments in the North Kivu region, particularly in Goma. Today we are reflecting on the horrific tragedy that struck the local population a week ago, with the tragic bombing of IDP sites which caused the deaths of many innocent people.

The victims of this senseless attack will be buried this Saturday, May 10, a day of mourning for the community. An official government delegation went to the site to organize the funerals and provide support to the bereaved families. Among the members of the delegation are representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Human Rights, as well as national deputies. Their presence aims to express the government’s solidarity and compassion towards the victims and their loved ones.

The circumstances of these bombings still remain unclear, but it seems that the M23 rebels were involved in this tragedy. The impacts of the bombs devastated the Lushagala site, located in a camp for displaced people in the Mugunga district of Goma. The consequences were devastating, with 18 people dead and 32 others injured, the majority women and children, a UN report revealed.

Faced with this unacceptable cruelty, it is crucial to condemn such attacks which only sow terror among populations already vulnerable and traumatized by past conflicts. This violence can in no way be justified, and it is imperative that those responsible for these heinous acts are identified and brought to justice.

Fatshimetrie will continue to closely monitor this matter and support all initiatives aimed at restoring peace and security in the region. It is time for the international community to mobilize to put an end to this violence and to guarantee the protection of innocent civilians who suffer the consequences of armed conflicts. The future of Goma and its inhabitants depends on our collective capacity to work for peace and justice.
