Home Ecology Heatwave in Kinshasa: authorities warn of the dangers of heat and call for vigilance

The oppressive heat which is hitting Kinshasa in May 2024 is causing growing concern among the population. The high temperatures recorded since last April are worrying the authorities, who are warning of the risks of heatwaves and calling for vigilance.

The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has launched an appeal to the population to take preventive measures to protect themselves from intense heat. Among the recommendations, it is advisable to hydrate regularly by drinking enough water to avoid dehydration. It is also recommended to avoid the consumption of alcohol and carbonated drinks, which can worsen the effects of heat on the body.

This exceptional situation is partly attributed to global warming, which results in increasingly high temperatures and increasingly frequent heat waves. The sun now rises at 6 a.m., spreading its oppressive heat throughout the day and reaching peaks above 35°C in the afternoon. These extreme weather conditions make daily life particularly difficult, with sultry nights where ventilation becomes a real challenge.

The effects of this heatwave are not limited only to feelings of discomfort and fatigue. Experts warn of health risks, especially for children aged zero to ten, who can develop rashes and other dermatological problems linked to excessive heat. It is therefore essential to take additional precautions to protect the most vulnerable in the face of these extreme weather conditions.

Faced with this unprecedented situation, it is essential to raise public awareness of the importance of adapting to climate change by adopting responsible behavior and taking measures to limit the harmful effects of heat. While we await longer-term solutions to combat global warming, it is crucial to remain vigilant and implement preventive measures to protect everyone’s health and well-being.
