In Dima Lumbu, a district of Bandundu-ville, the Kasaï river has overflowed in recent days, causing extensive damage and disrupting the daily lives of residents. The consequences of the rising waters were devastating, leading to the destruction of several homes and forcing families to take refuge in local school classrooms.
This situation had a direct impact on the functioning of educational establishments, preventing the resumption of classes. Indeed, classrooms found themselves invaded by affected families, who had to hastily leave their damaged homes. Students thus found themselves deprived of their usual learning environment, disrupting their schooling and compromising the end of the school year.
To deal with this crisis, measures were quickly taken by local education authorities. The Director of the provincial division of EPST Kwilu 1, Kadiata Nyembwe, affirmed that arrangements were being made to allow classes to resume and ensure students the opportunity to finish the school year in good conditions. Partners have also shown their support by offering to set up tents so that students can continue to study while waiting for things to return to normal.
Despite these disruptions, the Director of the Kwilu 1 educational province assured that the taking of the out-of-session tests of the state exam was not compromised, because no exam center was located in the Dima Lumbu district. Thus, the students concerned will be able to take their exams without being affected by the consequences of the overflowing of the Kasaï River.
This emergency situation highlights the vulnerability of populations to natural disasters and underlines the importance of collective mobilization to deal with such situations. It is essential that preventive and adaptive measures are put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of communities affected by such events.
